Primary 1 feat. Nina Persson - The Blues (Original Mix)

Picture wise it was a toss-up between posting a paint splattered, artistic picture of Primary 1 or a black/white, classic shot of Nina Persson from The Cardigans.

In the end – Nina – won for being far prettier than Primary 1 will ever be – no matter how talented he is!

You’d really have to be either massively tone-deaf or equipped with twenty thumbs to mess-up a production with Nina Persson on board.

As a producer – who wouldn’t want to open your studio door for her ? I’m pretty sure my production partner agree on this point!

Primary 1 works magic with Persson on – “The Blues” – which is a classy frontrunner for his forthcoming debut album, and with an imminent release on super-limited vinyl.

The end-result comes across like an electrocuted version of The Cardigans, and thankfully all bangers’n'mash are left far behind.

To me – Nina Persson’s voice is “air” and “fragility” embodied, and nothing quite sums up her incredible talent as the added bonus of her – “03.45: No Sleep” – with The Cardigans - the closing track from “Long Gone Before Daylight”.

I think most of us have – at one point or another – been awake in the dead of night wanting to call someone because they are special to you. “03.45: No Sleep” hammers the message home in big bold letters, and it’s so achingly beautiful it cuts in your heart!

Hear this on your iPod, after a long night, when you’re human pulp, and someone will come and sweep you off the floor later!

Reverendo Brown: Live Music Review

I have to say I quite like Reverendo Brown. This Barcelona Pop/ Rock quintet take from quite a few influences from different musical styles and directions.

The end result is very pleasant, their songs uplifting with an occult lower sadness that really needs to come out. I’ll come on to this in a bit. The band has already proved their mettle, getting through to the semi-finals of Barcelona’s prestigious Emergenzia’s Battle of the Bands.

Reverendo Brown Concert Highlights

The second song of the evening, “Luciernagas” kicked off with a great keyboard intro and waded into Radiohead style guitar work. Coupled off with a confident and energy vocal delivery this song didn’t disappoint the audience.

“Pupilas” , I enjoyed a lot. This song carries with it Rafa [the guitarist] leads with a indie, brit rock riffs while Christian on bass delivers solid rock edgy emotion beautifully. Estíbaliz gave  some Siouxsie Souix, vocal delivery[of Siouxsie and the Banshees fame] that got me a dancing baby! Great tune!

I think this is one of their stronger set songs.  I think the song would be even stronger with some male octave or tonal vocal harmonies.

“El Lado fresquito de la Almohada”, I personally think they ought to enter this song for Eurovision for the song for Spain. One of their strongest Spanish feeling indie  / rock numbers that the crowd instantly moves, nods and dances to! The keyboard melodies race ahead without abating, driving the hands in the air of the audience.  Rúben behind the drums puts his heart into strong percussive  hi-hat and snare delivery.  The song is near perfect.

For me, maybe they could do with some more phrasal spacing in the builds. I’d love to hear a hard house version of this song. RB, send it to Paul Oakenfold.… I think it’ll be a winner!

Reverendo Brown, covered “Creep“, the infamous Radiohead number. This showed a more serious nature to the band. The best thing is they carried it off perfectly, the edginess of the song showed a more delicate and emotional edge to the band. They were in tune with the song. The drum lines were perfectly delivered by Rúben giving the song a familiar pace and feel.

This shows the band has a lot more promise to carry off emotive songs through their delivery! I want to see more of this please!

“Vampiros” is where I think the keyboard melodies are very Killers orientated with  strong Oreja de Van Gogh style vocals.  With the pace set the band loved us and left us with I believe one of their strongest songs, “Malo Final“. This song for me topped, “El Lado fresquito de la Almohada”, but only just.

I’d say if you’re in a tough spot Reverendo Brown, I’d play “Malo Final“, first to get the crowd going and don’t give up! Nice one boys and girls!

Concert low lights

There’s not much to fault this band on. As I said, I think they could start to show a bit more indie edginess that’ll set them apart from being perceived as just another Spanish pop/rock band.

Reverendo Brown deserve more. With 2 of their stronger songs, plus their cover, ‘Creep’, has shown more musical depth to touch and convey emotion that the band put into their numbers.

Sadly, the key influences drift towards the pop angle, which is okay. However, it is not enough to get them really noticed as something different from the plethora of other great Spanish pop/rock bands out there.

I’d say their brit indie guitar lines from Rafa, I enjoyed a lot. Together with a great fusion of brit/iberican pop/rock [look at the newer direction of Vertusa Morla] seems to have some life, and something to set them apart.

Estíbaliz lead singer needs to be a lot more versatile on-stage and get away from the stand alone mike.  She interacts great with the band but she’s mainly static on stage and isn’t enough to kick you in the balls during the choruses [which are very strong] .

Estíbaliz please get up close to the crowd, play around with the band more. During the concert there was some interaction but it could be better with some of their slower numbers and male vocal harmonies that’d bring a dimension of band cohesion.

About Reverendo Brown, their influences and members

The female vocal lead band take a great chunk of their influence from Spanish Rock / Pop gods of music. Notably their sound is very Oreja de Van Gogh, with The Killers, REM and Radiohead thrown in for good measure.

Suprisingly the vocals, guided by the bands sound at times sounds very Souisie & the Banshees. A nice touch!

Behind the keyboards resides Alfredo, the band’s chief composer adding in great rhythmic and ambient chords, giving the band a great anthemic feel. It’s hard to place exactly where his influence is. The nearest would be compared to Brandon Flowers of The Killers fame.

When The World Is Running Down, Sting Makes The Best Of Dictator Blood Money

Without even playing a note of music, Sting is able to put the dude in the middle to sleep by exuding a heady air of inherent boringness and cloying smugness

You may remember a few weeks back when this blog broke (after The Guardian and several other media outlets) the shocking story of Beyonce accepting a couple of million dollars to perform at  Muammar al-Gaddafi’s son’s New Year’s party on the island of St. Barts. The latest pop star to cash in on the despotic-blood-money gravy train appears to be none other than self-congratulatory “do-gooder” Sting, who, The Guardian reports, accepted more than £1m to play for Uzbekistan dictator Islam Karimov’s daughter Gulnara Karimova.

Islam Karimov’s spirited antics include boiling people to death and conscripting children into forced labour. As you might expect, The United Nations has declared the guy a total fucking douchemonger. Sting, despite his associations with Amnesty International and various other humanitarian causes and his estimated £150m fortune, seemed to be right chuffed to get some of that bloody dictator money. Whatever you might say about Beyonce’s despot-furnished payday, at least she has never pretended to be some sort of spokesperson for the oppressed and downtrodden.

When the lid was blown off of Sting’s dirty little Uzbek secret, he was forced to issue a statement that read “I played in Uzbekistan a few months ago. The concert was organized by the president’s daughter and I believe sponsored by Unicef.”

According to Unicef, however, there is no truth to Sting’s claims about their involvement, which leads me to believe that the concert was actually sponsored by Uzbekicef and any funds raised went towards boiling people and enslaving children. Obviously, given the similarity in names between the two organizations, it’s quite likely that Sting simply made an error and his participation in the event, though unfortunate, was undertaken in good faith. Either that or he’s just a hypocritical, greedy shitbag.

My first Nazareth encounter was at the Lincoln Great Western Festval in 1972. They came on early on the Saturday morning to a crowd just waking up. At that time they had just released their second album Exercises. I can’t honestly remember a lot about their set that day, except that they seemed pretty good and played a great version of Morning Dew. I saw them around a dozen times in the 70s, witnessing some great shows at Sunderland Locarno, Newcastle Mayfair and City Hall (supporting Deep Purple on one occasion and headlining a few times) and at the Buxton festival in 1973. My last Naz gig of that era was 1981. I lost track of them for around 20 years, and saw them again a few years ago at Newcastle Arena. That recent gig revived my interest in the band; they still rocked just as much as they did all those years ago.

So tonight I’m back with my mates Will and Norm to see Naz again; some 38 (ouch!) years since standing in that field somewhere in Lincolnshire. Tongights venue is the Necastle Academy, and the support is the Deborah Bonham Band (sister of John). When we arrive Deborah and her band are already on stage. They have some pretty good rock songs, and her vocals are excellent, she reminds me of Maggie Bell. We get a great suprise for the last couple of songs when she is joined on stage by her nephew Jason Bonham who takes the drum stool; they treat us to a great version of Rock n Roll as their last song.

After a short wait Nazareth take the stage. The current version of the band features two original members: Dan McCafferty on vocals and Peter Agnew on bass. The drum stool is now taken by Peter’s son Lee Agnew who replaced original drummer Darrel Sweet, who sadly passed away a few years ago; and the guitar slot is more than ably filled by Jimmy Murrison who has been with the band since 1994. Nazareth are one band who seem even better these days than they used to. The sound is clear and loud, and Dan McCafferty’s vocals are as strong as they were in the 70s; which is pretty amazing given the way in which he screams the words out in an effortless manner. Pete Agnew commands the right hand side of the stage, with the same grin on his face, and Jimmy’s guitar playing is excellent. The set is a mixture of old and new (they latest album came out in 2008 and is called Newz), and features favourites such as Bad Bad Boy, My White Bicycle, Shanghai’d In Shanghai, Hair Of The Dog, and Love Hurts. They finish with Broken Down Angel which gets everyone singing along. For a few minutes I thougt that we weren’t going to get an encore as its after the 10pm curfew that the Academy has on a Saturday night, but they come back and do a three song encore including the great Razamanaz and This Flight Tonight. We all agree that they can still cut the mustard; great stuff and time for the chip shop.

vatle, from norway with love

once again i was so happy to find some fresh meat in the industry! behind the vatle designs, stands a very ambitious girl from norway. i love it when people have full pockets of dreams and have guts to fulfill them! and this girl is doing really fine! i came across these pictures from the recent fashion week that took place in those sights and i fell in love with how the show was done.

a very mistique, but very fun, pop and creative. love the light! whole thing looked like some sort of freakshow, which is amazing!

And now, what made me choke on wow. surely fashion needs victims and pain, and not being able to drive a car, or be in the low ceiling room. but why should we care if the outfit is gorgeous! girls and boys, look at this perfect dress! again electric colors, shouting ‘long live the pop’, and freaaaakshow. totaly in love!

being amazed about vatle, Juicy Dry decided to make some further investigation. designs seem to be influenced by pop, indeed. and i love that girly look they have, girly yet extravagant, which maked a very fine combo.

Donkeyboy Claims the Top Spot in Sweden

Donkeyboy makes it all the way this week as “Ambitions” claims the top spot on the Swedish singles chart. The track climbs 3-1 and pushes former chart-topper Owl City to No.3. Meanwhile, the album Caught in a Life races 16-6. Play returns to the charts this week with “Famous.” The group broke in the early 2000’s, and climbed the US charts with “Us Against the World.”  Today, it has reformed thanks to the docu-soap Made in Sweden. A new career has been forged by demon producers Anders Bagge and Andreas Carlsson, and this week “Famous” is the highest new entry at No.5.

“We Are the World 25: For Haiti” debuts at No.17 this week, still ahead of Simon Cowell’s charity project Helping Haiti which moves 36-25 this week. Sade shoots to No.1 on the album chart with Soldier of Love.

124. The Funk Brothers

The Funk Brothers is another name for the Motown Record Company house band from Detroit, Michigan. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, the Funk Brothers provided an understated, swinging backing for the many famous singing artists who gained fame with Motown. The list is long, and the Funk Brothers may be featured on more 1960s hit songs than any other band.

There are few household names in the band, though bassist James Jamerson has gained a great deal of posthumous respect. There’s a great documentary about the band called Standing In The Shadows Of Motown. I highly recommend it. Here are two videos from this great movie:

Vatican announces list of ten greatest rock and pop albums

The Vatican has previously denounced rock music as the devil’s work but in a surprise change of tune on Sunday the Holy See’s official newspaper, L’ Osservatore Romano, published what it called “a semiserious guide” to the top ten rock and pop albums of all time.

The list included The Beatles’ “Revolver,” which was given the top slot, Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of The Moon”, Oasis’ 1995 bestseller “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” and Michael Jackson’s blockbuster “Thriller.”

The Killers, Maxïmo Park, Franz Ferdinand, Oasis and Lily Allen play Benicassim Festival

Bennicassim, Barcelona Festival. Huge names, for a 3 day festival.
15th – 18th July, 2010

Beach festivals in Barcelona, I love ‘em! At Bennicassim there’s  some HUGE bands playing for this festival, [just see the list below] . It’s no surprise as Vince Power, of ex Mean Fiddler fame is behind the organising!

The prices are not so great when you convert it to euros, but, there’s a very impressive line up at the Benicassim Festival.

It’s cheaper for us locals mind, but the 4 day ticket includes camping for the week… so how better to chill out, near a beach, sangria, sun and tapas!

It looks huge with camping they say for 35,000 people.

Here’s the damage:
four-day ticket (16th-19th July): £160;
one-day ticket (Thursday or Friday): £67.50. Camping not included.

Joyous "Rain" is #1: Tuned-On! Top 30 #320 - Feb 15/10

He finally did it!  After reaching #3 with “We Are Golden”, then #2 with “Blame It On The Girls”, British vocalist Mika goes all the way with the joyous “Rain”.  It should easily stay atop the chart into March while other songs make headway.

“Rain” knocks Simon Curtis’ “Delusional” to #2 after 4 charts (8 weeks) at the top. Once Simon’s mixtape 8Bit Heart is released though when he gets to 8,000 followers on Twitter – he’s now over 7,500 – watch for an influx of new Simon songs on the chart!  The free download of “Delusional” is still available right here (as well as in my chart).

Lifehouse’s “Halfway Gone” moves up to #3, while Pet Shop Boys have their biggest hit on this chart in its 11 1/2 year history – of course the chart would have been generously filled with PSB songs in the 80’s and 90’s – with their cover of “Viva La Vida” mixed with dashes of “Domino Dancing” at #4.  Lady GaGa’s set to have her biggest hit on this chart with “Speechless” moving from 10-5, as “Bad Romance” tumbles to #7.  Nelson Clemente’s slick and mysterious “90 Days” and Crystal Method/Emily Haines’ “Come Back Clean” each enter the Top 10 for the first time.

Despite mixed public reaction to the Fixin’ To Thrill CD, the blogverse is steadily promoting the CD as Canadian band Dragonette’s latest single “Pick Up The Phone” is picking up believers.  The song is the Fastest Riser on the chart this week, up 23-15.  Other songs bowing in the last few weeks are no slouches either, such as those by Lady GaGa (check out the bottom heavy King5kat remix of “Teeth”), Blake Lewis (check out the LA Riots radio edit of  ”Heartbreak on Vinyl”, Justin Timberlake/Matt Morris/Charlie Sexton, John Mayer (oh despite the self-induced bad publicity, his songs will get him through), and Jason Derulo.

I’m not going to re-blog about the many pleasures of Dan Black’s Weird Science mixtape – “Pass That Head Noize” charts at #23 – or Evan Taubenfeld’s “Starbucks Girl” (debuting at #25).  After a six year absence from my chart, it’s great to have producer/songwriter extraordinaire BT back on the scene.  After a few years of critical acclaim with more experimental offerings such as This Binary Universe, BT is back in 2010 in more accessible dance territory with songs from his latest CD These Hopeful Machines.  His first single, including vocals by The Bleach Works singer Christian Burns (also ex-BBMak – you heard Christian a few years back on Tiesto’s “In The Dark”), is “Suddenly”.  As much as we like to get caught up in fun, lightweight dance music of the moment, the immaculately detailed layers in BT’s production and the vibrancy of the melody make “Suddenly” more than worthy of your attention.

The Reflective Inklings Presents: The Valentine Playlist (Gem)

This is the first of the Valentine Playlists that I would be posting today! This playlist was done by Gem. You may have seen her Glee: The Music Volume 2 review (Click the link to read it: HERE) already in the blog. This time around, she contributes by sending in her Valentine Playlist.

They say girls tend to like guys who are like their fathers. Deep and poignant, this John Mayer ballad tells us why this is so, and how parental love is the foundation of a person’s concept of the emotion.

2. Haven’t Met You Yet – Michael Buble

For the man who works hard to find the girl of his dreams, this song is for you. Plus it’s really fun and catchy.

3. The Bird and the Worm – Owl City

Owl City songs are so cutesy and metaphorical that listeners tend to get lost in the song, but singer-songwriter Adam Young managed to make a great mix of melody and content to become this really gleeful song about the exhilaration of being with your special someone.

4. The Only Exception – Paramore

This song stands out in Paramore latest album, Brand New Eyes, because of its relatively slower tempo, but that’s not all that makes this song good. It has a great story and most anyone who experienced the healing power of love will attest to that.

5. Love Today – Mika

Someone should make this the official theme song of Valentine’s Day, nuff said.

6. Naman Kasi – Nicole Hyala

OPM love songs tend to go towards the cheesy side, but this song…well, it’s just so ridiculously cheesy that it’s tons of fun to listen to. Come on, who aren’t guilty of loving such lines as “Bangin ka ba kasi nahuhulog na ako sa yo?”.

7. Out of My League – Stephen Speaks

There’s something about this song that’s so enchanting. Perhaps it’s because it’s every girl’s fantasy to have a guy like her as much as this guy in the song does; for guys, fall in love with a girl that’s totes out of reach. Beautiful.

8. I’ll Cover You – Rent

A sweet and simple duet that went on to become one of the most memorable Broadway love songs.

9. What A Good Boy – The Barenaked Ladies

A really cool song about the triumph of love over pressure and problems in life.

10. You and I Both – Jason Mraz

I just love happy breakup songs, and Jason Mraz makes the best ones. If only all guys were as un-bitter as this one.

11. My Junk – Spring Awakening

Because “Crush” just doesn’t cut it anymore these days.

12. Sunday Morning – Maroon 5

With its feel good tone and Adam’s pretty lovable voice, this song is a perfect accompaniment to a walk in the park with your loved ones or a karaoke party with your friends.

13. 1234 – Feist

Love can get very strange and unpredictable and it can’t work out for the best for everyone. The childlike quirkiness of this song share that feeling in the the most lighthearted way possible. And the music video is so cool.

14. These Words – Natasha Bedingfield

“I love you”, sometimes there are just no others words to say it. This song is a testament to the strange phenomenon of the power of those three words.

The Radio Dept. - Clinging To A Scheme (Review)

Rarely review any bands/musicians that is in Europe besides the usual British acts.
One being The Radio Dept. from Sweden.
They are getting some buzz for their long awaited third album called Clinging To A Scheme.
This album will drop on April 21, 2010
Know how anticipated it is, there is no chance they will make a stop in Ottawa for a show.
This is my first time listening to this album (Thanks to the people at The Musebox.net)
Doing some research on this band:
The name was taken from a gas station/radio repairer in Lund (Sweden) which had a large sign with the name
“Radioavdelningen” (The Radio Department in Swedish) hanging outside their shop.
That making the third album was four year in the making.
Very surprised on listening to this album.
Its filled with great European indie pop and dream pop.
It has that British 80s music influence from Joy Division, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Jesus and Mary Chain and The Smiths.
For those big fans of them, you just have to wait for the March or April release date.

The Power of the Pop Melody

So I was watching the Grammys a little while ago and I heard this song performed by Lady Antebellum. When they got to the chorus, I swore that I had heard that exact same melody on a hit 80’s song. I mean it was so clear that I could play the melody that I remembered off the top of my head on the guitar. But for the life of me, I could not remember the name of the song or the artist. I just had the melody. Thanks to google, I was able to find the song I was thinking of right here.

Kelly notes – “HELLO?!! Their song “Need you now” SOUNDS like it comes from the 80’s because it does! It is a rip-off of the Alan Parsons Project song “Eye in the Sky.” Compare the Chorus’!”

You be the judge. Listen to the chorus of the first song and compare it to the chorus of the second song (starts at 1:32). Is this a case of The Stones ripping off K.D. Lang or Coldplay ripping off Joe Satriani? How long before the Alan Parsons Project sues Lady Antebellum? Darn catchy 80’s melodies! You never know when they will subliminally make it into one of your songs.

'Plants vs Zombies' For The iPhone

Well, As you probably know PopCap’s hottest game right now on the PC is ‘Plants vs Zombies’.  What you might not have known is that they have been making it for the iPhone, but have had several delays.  PopCap is now saying it will be released on February 15.  I hope they do this time, because this game is very fun, and I recommend it to you for the PC, and sense they have been delaying it will most likely be a great iPhone app worthy of more than $0.99.  Here is a trailer for the game (iPhone platform)

Kina Grannis - Valentine

Kina Grannis is someone I discovered some years ago on the site Digg.com when the site creator Kevin Rose spoke about her on the video podcast Diggnation. She made a rather cringe-worthy song dedicated to the site which got a lot of diggs (votes) providing her with plenty of exposure. A couple of years later and another story was posted on Digg about a new single and video announced from her called “Valentine” (released at an appropriate time) which is one of those tracks that I feel compelled to share. This song is an incredibly infectious little ditty, and has echoes of the demo version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” which I posted some time ago, with its incredibly laid back and stripped down sound. The previews of the other tracks I heard from the album on her homepage sound beautifully produced and with a really organic sound, reminisent of the album Coco from Colbie Caillat I’ve blogged profusely about previously. This song flows easily over the air with it’s summery, mellow sound and if this track is any indication of what the rest of the album may sound like, I’m intently waiting on hearing it.

Seven Things From The Seventies That Sucked

If you asked me which decade was the worst decade for America, I would state “The Nineteen Seventies.” Not the Civil war decade, not the Depression, nor even the last ten years. And I have seven reasons.

Note that none of these reasons have anything to do with what was done overseas, or with arts and entertainment. These are political actions that many people cheered on because they took an immediate benefit from these decisions. It’s only with hindsight (and a willingness to look beyond one’s nose) that we see what it was that made the seventies the pile of ugliness that it was.

So…here’s the list, with my reasons:

• Nixon Changes How Farm Subsidies Worked. Used to be farmers would farm enough to put stuff to market, and the government would pay farmers to let fields lie fallow for a year or two. Clover or other plants which had relatively little worth on the market but plenty of abililty to revive soil would be planted and the only major cost would be a hit on the pride of the farmer. Now they’re paid to overproduce certain crops, and we get depleted farm land, a dead Gulf of Mexico and High Fructose Corn Syrup to mess with our bodies (more than real sugar, may I add).
• McGovern takes over the Democratic Party. Before the people behind George McGovern took over the Democratic Party, it was run by city bosses and other people who knew how to run a government and hold office. After him, the party became a group of minorities who had grevances and needed people who were able to hold them together (read: hold their hand and tell them “Everything was all right, now be patient and vote for us; after all, you want to vote for THEM?”). This has led to the pussification of the Democratic Party Leaders at a time when they need to be real men, and the rise of Bullies in the Republican Party (because they can, and it works).
• Roe v Wade, Doe v Bolton. Granted, this was more-or-less imposed by the Supreme Court. However, one thinks that we would have come to a compromise that would have been accepted by everyone but the extremists; however only the extremists are allowed to speak up. Not only that, but this was one of the changes that allowed the “Me Generation” to arise, as the ruling declared nationwide the freedom of women from the dictates of pregnancy, children raising and the consequences of voluntary actions and ugly twists of fate…and it allowed women to stay in the workplace longer, essentially doubling the work force (and allowing for the possibility of wages to be forced downward). This, of course, is the most contested of decisions, and has had certain adjustments done to it over the years.
• Bankruptcy Laws loosened. I fully understand why the Bankruptcy laws were loosened by congress – once people were over their heads, it just gets worse and worse. However, we’re now talking about the freedom from the strictures of financial responsibility. On the personal scale, this meant people could spend like crazy and force the system to absolve their debts every so often, in the corporate world this meant the ability to expand like crazy, pay their CEOs obscene amounts, and toss aside unions when they felt the workers were given more rights than they deserved (none, with all the responsibilities the companies could pile on them). Which explains why the business world has suddenly gotten more choppy, with companies coming and going at will (outside of Wal-Mart, which in much of Rural America IS the government).
• No-Fault Divorce Spread Nationwide. This seems to be more a pet peeve of mine, as this law seems sacred still to many people.
• Deregulation of the trucking industry. Here’s the first of three reasons why I think Ted Kennedy killed Mary Jo Kopechne. For the sake of cheaper rates the Trucking laws were loosened, and the Truckers, already suffering from five-plus years of reduced earnings (Dropping the speed limit from 70 to 55 was a more than 20% reduction in their earning power, any wonder they grew to hate the DOA?) were thrown under the bus for the sake of a few fewer cents cost for the consumers (or, more likely a few more cents profits per item for the companies selling what the trucks brought). Is it any wonder they’ve become the most reactionary of constituencies – you too would hate the people who gave you the middle finger, gave the people immediately above you carte blanche to do what they pleased and told you to worship the people fucking you over.
• Deregulation of Airlines. The second of three reasons I believe Ted Kennedy killed Mary Jo Kopechne (the third being his treatment of Carter in the 1980 primaries). It’s this item that drove PATCO into the arms of Reagan in 1980, which led to their (and the working class’s) betrayal in August 5, 1981. EVERYTHING (and I mean everything) since then can be traced to this date; I’ve heard of parties at corporate headquarters on this date for years.

Probably the biggest thing to notice is how libertarian the list is. Liberalization of Divorce, Freedom to delay motherhood through extreme measures, cheaper prices for food, travel and other stuff, ability to escape one’s financial problems: whatever could be wrong with that stuff?

Well, it’s been thirty years since 1980, and we’re seeing it. Two generations unwilling to marry because they’ve seen the scars of divorce. A nation that seems psychotically split between city/college and country/suburb. Bankruptcy from Government to people. A job “market” that no longer uses what’s out there. Working and Middle class on the cusp of final defeat (no unions, no organized body to fight against The Man ™). People so willing to believe in the system that they’ll cut their own throat to affirm that belief (aka Tea-Baggers); meanwhile everyone else has grown passive waiting for the Messiah (whomever that person may be) to save them from their inaction and passivity (Read: the Tea-Baggers may get “their way” by default, as they’re the only people willing to back their demands by actions and guns – Like Abraham at the mount, they’ll figure out that my throat will readily substitue for their own.).

I could have done without Disco (which comes from Roe and Doe), not needed Punk (which eventually became a reaction to points 6 and 7) and maybe been willing to suffer under twenty more years of Hair-Metal and Country/Country Rock transcendent for better times. Instead we got what we now have.

And it sucks.

Average Song For Good Cause

I know, I know. I am posting a song from Natalie Bassingthwaigthe, don’t worry I haven’t gone round the bend.

For the same-sex law reform campaign, Wear It With Pride, Nat recently teamed up with the LGBT Health Alliance to celebrate the 85 new same-sex law reforms.

They made a video, filled with celebrity cameos to her track Love Like This. It’s camp as all get up, but thats the point.

Some of the arrangements in the song are also quite good, its one of Nat’s better ones.

When Soda Goes Hillbilly

Is it just me or has soda gone hillbilly? C’mon, even if you don’t drink soda it’s hard not to notice how they’ve returned to their roots. Cane sugar. Hatfield and McCoy logos. Really? Is an old look on a new product going to make it sell? Well, Denny’s tried it and more white poeple than ever showed up for a sock hop.

All this over a rotten Grand Slam and Little Cow Polk.

When everyone gave up on Denny’s, they stormed off to the gas station to boycott Coke and Pepsi’s return to logos that make their drinks look they cost 25 cents.

Like Coors, this shit trickles down from the mountains, too.

They’ve even gone so far as to change the look of their vending machines!

This one was recently converted from an outhouse. 25 cents will get you a Coke. 50 cents will get you a pack of Camels.

It’s hard not to buy into the soda makers mad marketing schemes. After all, remember when Coke was all about cocaine and Pepsi was all about alcohol?

So now I wonder what product will go back to its roots next. Will Maxi-Pads revert to Mini-Pads? Will Jolt Cola make a comeback? Will Budweiser…oh yeah, never mind.
